Wilder Maker - Serious Business on BTR [ep132]
Originally known as Boy Without God, Gabriel Birnbaum’s eccentric indie folk project, Wilder Maker, is full of enough noise and passion to live up to the new name. With the help of a large cast of friends and acquaintances, Birnbaum makes each song a journey, weaving a story through bursts of noise and varied riffs and time changes, with plenty of room to live and breath. Then there are pop songs — well, they’re all pop songs, really, but these tight little nuggets have horns that stab in all the right places, just daring you to dance, and maybe even get a little wild.

Kleenex Girl Wonder - Serious Business on BTR [ep131]
Kleenex Girl Wonder is the chameleon-esque stage name of one Graham Smith, a songwriter from the suburbs of Chicago who’s been calling New York City his home for some time now. Beginning with a group of neighborhood friends and evolving into a shifting cast of players, KGW is a sort of indie rock institution, constantly experimenting while staying true to its time-tested formula. The current band features Smith on bass and vocals, Thayer McClanahan on guitar, and Matt LeMay on drums.

Dope Body - Serious Business on BTR [ep126]
Dope Body is a band from Baltimore, Maryland. Though their use of punk tactics — abrasive blasts, loops, yelps and shouts — gets them pegged as a noise band, there’s also a tight groove running through their jams that makes them largely danceable; as Travis says, it’s very physical AND musical. This sort of flexibility is what enables them to share the stage with more dance-oriented acts like Mykki Blanco as frequently as their thrashier brethren in Roomrunner. Here, they kept some of that boundless energy just barely under wraps as their sound exploded in the studio.

Jane Eyre - Serious Business on BTR [ep125]
Jane Eyre — briefly known as Boy King Island in its early stages — is a quickly rising band on the New York scene and marks a shift from the critically acclaimed folk of songwriter Jesse Rifkin’s previous efforts as The Wailing Wall. While fans might first notice their outfits (Travis sure did) or the omnipresence of R. Buckminster Fuller’s portrait onstage, the songs should really be taking precedence here. Combining the group’s collective backgrounds in music studies, rock bands, and assorted experimental noisemaking situations, Jane Eyre is a powerful force generating uniquely memorable, experimental pop music.
